Winter Irrigation Adjustments
In Central Florida, adjusting your irrigation system during winter is important because the cooler temperatures and shorter days reduce the need for frequent watering. Here's a step-by-step guide from the irrigation pros at ELT Landscape.
Reduce Watering Frequency
Warm-Season Lawns (e.g., St. Augustine, Zoysia): Water every 7–14 days depending on rainfall and temperatures.
More astonishing Weather Crops/Plants: Adjust to their specific needs, often requiring less frequent watering.
Florida's soils retain less water, so avoid overwatering; use short cycles to prevent runoff.
Water During the Right Time
Set your irrigation system to run early, ideally between 4:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. This reduces water loss from evaporation and avoids fungal diseases caused by nighttime wetness.
Monitor Rainfall
Florida winters often bring rain, especially in southern areas. Install a rain sensor or use a weather-based irrigation controller to skip watering when it rains automatically.
Adjust Sprinkler Heads
Inspect all sprinkler heads for clogs, leaks, or misalignment. Adjust them to avoid watering driveways, sidewalks, or non-landscaped areas.
Use the "1/2 Inch Rule"
Apply only about 1/2 to 3/4 inch of water per irrigation session to moisten the root zone without oversaturating.
Switch to Manual if Possible
If your landscaping doesn't require consistent irrigation in the winter, consider turning off the automatic system and watering only as needed.
Watch for Signs of Stress
Lawns: Leaves will fold or turn bluish-gray when thirsty.
Plants: Wilted leaves or drooping stems may indicate more water needs.
Check Local Restrictions
Some counties in Florida impose watering restrictions during the dry season (typically November through April). Check with your local water management district to stay compliant.
