Restoring Green Grass

In Central Florida, yellowing grass is often a sign of issues like nutrient deficiencies, pests, disease, or environmental stress. When our customers ask about the best ways to restore grass to a healthy green color, we list the following steps:
1. Identify the Cause
Before applying any treatment, determine why your grass is turning yellow. Common causes include:
Nutrient Deficiency: Lack of nitrogen, iron, or other essential nutrients.
Overwatering or Underwatering: Both can stress the grass, leading to yellowing.
Pests or Disease: Chinch bugs, fungal infections, and root rot can cause discoloration.
Compacted Soil: Poor aeration limits nutrient and water absorption.
Improper Mowing: Cutting grass too short weakens it.
2. Improve Soil Health
Test Your Soil: Get a soil test to check pH and nutrient levels. Florida soil tends to be sandy and may need amendments.
Fertilize Properly: Use a slow-release fertilizer high in nitrogen (e.g., 16-4-8) to promote greening. Apply based on soil test results.
Iron Supplementation: If your soil lacks iron, apply iron sulfate or chelated iron to quickly green up your grass.
3. Adjust Watering Practices
Water Deeply but Infrequently: Ensure your lawn gets about 1 inch of water per week, either from rainfall or irrigation.
Water Early in the Morning: This minimizes evaporation and fungal risks.
Check for Drainage Issues: Poor drainage can lead to root rot and yellowing.
4. Mow and Aerate Correctly
Mow at the Right Height: St. Augustine grass, common in Florida, should be mowed at 3.5–4 inches. Cutting too short weakens it.
Sharpen Mower Blades: Dull blades tear grass, making it vulnerable to disease.
Aerate Your Lawn: This reduces compaction and allows nutrients and water to reach the roots.
5. Address Pests and Disease
Check for Chinch Bugs: These common Florida pests suck nutrients from grass blades. Use an insecticide if needed.
Treat Fungal Issues: If yellow patches spread, apply a fungicide to control brown patch or take-all root rot.
6. Add Organic Matter
Top-Dress with Compost: Spreading a thin layer of organic compost improves soil structure and adds nutrients.
Use Mulched Grass Clippings: Leaving clippings on the lawn helps recycle nutrients.
By following these steps, you can restore your yellow grass to a lush, green lawn and keep it healthy year-round.
