Palm Trees: A Tropical Touch

Palm trees are an iconic part of Florida's landscape, and Central Florida provides an ideal climate for many palm species. Whether you're aiming to enhance curb appeal or create your tropical oasis, planting palm trees is a great investment. However, successful planting requires proper planning, selection, and care.
Choosing the Right Palm Tree
Some of Florida's hardy options include the Sylvester Palm, Sabal Palm (also known as Cabbage Palm), Queen Palm, Pindo Palm, and Windmill Palm. Each has its own unique look and growth requirements, so consider your landscape design, available space, and sun exposure when making a choice.
Preparing for Planting
Start by selecting a well-draining location with full to partial sunlight. Palms don't like "wet feet," so avoid low-lying areas that collect water. Before planting, soak the root ball in water for approximately one hour to minimize transplant shock.
Planting Process
Dig a hole about twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper. Palms should be planted so that the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding ground. Gently place the palm into the hole and backfill with soil, tamping lightly to remove air pockets. Water deeply and add mulch around the base (but not directly against the trunk) to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Post-Planting Care
Watering is crucial for newly planted palms. For the first month, water every day or every other day, then gradually taper to 2–3 times per week. Avoid fertilizing for the first six weeks to prevent root burn. Once established, use a palm-specific slow-release fertilizer three to four times a year.
Be patient—palms grow slowly at first as they establish roots. Keep an eye out for pests like palm weevils or nutrient deficiencies, which often show up as yellowing leaves.
With the right species and care, palm trees can thrive in Central Florida's warm, humid environment. They bring beauty, shade, and a true Florida feel to any yard.
Our crews plant hundreds of palm trees each year, and we have connections with Turner's Tree Farm in Plant City to source the best palms on the market.
